Chainsaw Safety Tips
- Read and understand the manufacturer's instructions
- Check the chainsaw before every use
- Sharpen the chainsaw, a sharp blade works best
- Wear protective clothing
- Do not cut above shoulder height
- Turn motor off, blade pointed to rear when carrying the chainsaw
- First aid box should always accompany you
A safe environment
- Keep people and animals away from working area
- Keep a second person within calling distance
- Use the saw to only cut wood
- Avoid using the saw in wet or windy conditions, and in poor light
- Wait a few minutes for the motor to cool before refueling
Safe starting
- NEVER "drop start" a chainsaw, always start on a flat piece of ground, clear
of debris
Safe chainsaw use
- Run the saw at full revs
- Keep your body to the left of the saw to avoid kickbacks
- Keep a firm grip with your left hand on the front handle, thumb below the handle
- Make sure to tension the chain correctly
- If wood shavings become dusty, your chain could need sharpening
- Be vigilant about the position of the upper quadrant of the blade tip. This is the part
which triggers kickbacks upon hitting resistance. Avoid engaging this part of the blade
with anything you are cutting
- Clear away all brush, vegetation and obstructions that might trigger a kickback
- Avoid cuts that will cause the chainsaw to jam
- Avoid jamming. Always cut into the compression wood first until the cut starts to close
Make the compression cut beneath if the log is suspended from one end, and on top if
supported at both ends
- Cut from the other side toward the compression cut
- Use a wedge to prevent the compression cut jamming on the blade
Safety controls
- Ensure the chainsaw is fitted with a chain brake - preferably inertia
activated Preventing fire
- Avoid smoking while filling/operating the saw
- Refuel in a clean area, and when the motor is cool
- Wipe spillage, and tighten fuel caps
- Move at least 10' away from the fueling area before starting
- Keep a fire extinguisher handy
Personal protective equipment
- Wear a face shield or safety glasses
- Safety helmet
- Hearing protection
- Gloves
- Safety boots with non-slip soles
- Long pants, chainsaw chaps are recommended
